I will be attending an interview for a job as Service Delivery Manager with the Shared Infrastructure Services division of an insurance company. I’m trying to find out as much as I can regarding the technical aspects of the role as part of my preparation. The main responsibility of the job with the insurer is to act as the main management focal point towards the outsourced IT service provider to ensure they uphold the level of service outlined in the agreement.

My background is not in IT, rather in customer service, technical support and business process outsourcing management within outsourced and offshore environments. From a business/process standpoint I think I am good, especially if I get some ITIL knowledge under my belt. However, I’m worried about the technical requirements.

Does one need to be a ‘technical expert’ for this type of position? What level of knowledge would be sufficent to be effective, using industry certifications as a guage if possible.

I am a SDM at a large corporation. ITIL is a good place to start but can be somewhat daunting in interpretation and mental absorption. So, focus on a short and long-term learning goal of ITIL, but don’t sweat it immediately.

As far as Technical knowledge, it is not a critical point for an SDM. Depending on the interpretation and implementation of Service Deliver in that company, it should be more focused on customer relations, costs, and forecasting of the Infrastructure needs for the enabling of the business.

So, that is the short and sweet version. But, no…. technical knowledge shouldn’t be big, unless they combine multiple roles. You will need to be technically minded enough to adapt to their way, and be able to pull in the resources based on your assessments at times.

I’m one of the unfortunately people who didn’t got a great Job in an the IT industry… I’m in Philippines by the ways, so that you know i’m living in a country that sucks… I’m worried at my career… Acceenture is hiring me but as an employee under BPO(Business Process Outsourcing) and this include call center skills. maybe if there’s no IT company will be hiring me, i’ll take this position… but i’m afraid that it would be hard for me to switch my career path from BPO to I.T. so what could i do!??? I was Thinking of while working, i’m gonna earn my salaries and used it in learning ORACLE or SAP? would that be a good idea? would a company hire me if i did this? and what a SAP Business One anyway. does it include ABAP training?

Oh come on the Philippines is Manny’s home country, the country doesnt suck, it has great potential. As for the job, if you’re crying about it get out then, there are several other countries who could hire you, Belize for instance

Is this a question, or a resume? As far as outsourcing to India, what a joke, thats why the economy is going to hell. shipping our jobs overseas–why pay $20 an hour when you can outsource to India for 20 cents

I am a practicing certified public accountant. I am currently under International Financial Reporting Standards. I render services such, accounting processing, payroll processing, outsourcing, tax filings, business analysis, financil statement analysis, prepation of financial stateemnts, working capital management, asset management and managerial services. I’m done with my business plan, and already had two clients in Utah, USA but i need more client in US, CANADA, European Countries and other IFRS-based Countries. Today I had a phone call with a woman to schedule an interview. She asked me a basic question about what kind of work the company I was previously employed for did. Now I had worked for one company that did Business Process Outsourcing work but was purchased by a printing company. I did my best to explain this to her but it seemed that she had trouble comprehending what I said and she got a little agitated with me and accused me of not being able to comprehend. Now I know that the interviewer pretty much holds all the cards and if they belittle you in any way, there’s little to nothing that you can do or is there ? What’s the best way to handle yourself when the interview is doing nothing but trying to belittle you and make you feel stupid ?

Explain that there must be an issue in the communication between the two of you, and attempt again. Apologize for the frustration. If there are still belittling comments made, you have every right to stand up for yourself. You could let her know that you feel her behavior is unprofessional. If that is a representation of the company you are applying for, look elsewhere.
An interview is not only to determine if a company wants you, but also if you want that company.
